Description Of Petrol Bomb Attacker Released

A description of the man who attacked the Department of Finance with a petrol bomb in Dublin yesterday has been released.

An investigation was launched yesterday after the petrol bomb hit the Department of Finance in Merrion St in the Capital around 10.50pm, leading to a small fire.

Gardaí were last night examining footage taken from CCTV cameras in the area in a bid to identify the attacker, and have released a description of the man.

He is described as wearing a dark-coloured woolly hat and a black fleece top, zipped up the front with a white logo on it. His face was covered by a scarf and he also wore a light-coloured T-shirt and dark blue jeans.

Gardaí say the bomber ran onto Merrion Street from the direction of Baggotrath Lane at around 10.50pm and made his escape afterwards towards Baggot Street.

A small fire broke out in the premises and a garda who was on duty in the building attempted to extinguish the fire. He then called the fire services and five units rushed to the scene.

A spokesman at the Department of Finance said most of the damage was done to the window and its frame.

A small amount of petrol got into the room, but damage inside was minimal, he said, possibly due to the fast reaction of internal security staff who managed to extinguish the small fire.

No one was injured in the incident.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who was in the area between 10.15pm and 11.15pm on Sunday and might have information about the suspect or the incident, to contact them at Pearse Street station, 01 6669000, or on the confidential phone line, 1800 666111.
