Two Held After Cannabis Haul
Gardaí are holding two men after a quantity of cannabis was discovered in their car.
Gardai from the Balbrigan Drug Unit assisted by Divisional Units stopped the car at the M1 to M50 junction at around 3.30pm yesterday.
During a search the vehicle, 10 kilos of Cannabis Resin (subject to analysis) was uncovered with an approximate street value of €60,000.
The two males, one in mid 50s the other mid 20s, were arrested and conveyed to Balbrigan Garda Station where they are currently being detained under the Drug Trafficking Act.
The find comes within days of a report by homeless support group Merchants Quay Ireland, which claimed the level of Heroin use has reached proportions of a "national crisis".
The group said that during the year 4,657 individuals had accessed their "needle-exchange" facility, representing a slight increase on 2007, while the number of interventions with homeless people had increased by 12%.
Tony Geoghegan, Chief Executive of the group, said: "We began to see the first effects of the economic crisis with more people than ever seeking help at our drop in centre for homeless people.
During 2008 we saw the continuation of a number of worrying trends. Injecting drug use is increasingly widespread across the country."

Gardaí Arrest 45 In Major Drugs Operation
A total of 45 people have been arrested in the past 48 hours in Gardaí a crackdown on the sale and supply of heroin and “crack” cocaine in the Dublin region. The operation, which involved Garda drug units from Kevin Street, Pearse Street and Store Street stations, resulted in 150 charges being brought, according to Gardaí this morning.

200 Cannabis Plants Found In Co Kerry
Cannabis plants, with an estimated street value of €160,000, were discovered by gardai in Rathmore, Co Kerry, last night. Officers from the Kanturk Drug Unit carried out a planned search of a house near the town, uncovering some 200 plants at various stages of growth. The scene has been sealed and a technical examination is underway.

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross has announced the commencement of the drug driving provisions in the Road Traffic Act 2016. One of the key measures in the legislation provides for Preliminary Drug Testing, which will enable Gardaí to test motorists whom they suspect of driving under the influence of drugs at the roadside.
