Dublin Traffic Set To Be Tackled
A number of new measures will be introduced in order to deal with Dublin's Traffic problems, it has been announced today.
In one of the widest encompassing ideas, traffic speed limits in Dublin city centre are to be reduced from next year to 30km/h following a vote by city councillors.
The councillors have approved a plan to reduce speed limits to 30kmh between St Stephen's Green and the middle of Dorset Street and from Merrion Square to Church Street.
The restrictions, which will come into force on January 31, are designed to cut the number of road deaths in the capital.
Dublin's city manager has admitted the introduction of a rush-hour bus lane in the city centre has caused a 'perception issue' for motorists.
Meanwhile, Dublin's city manager John Tierney has admitted the introduction of a rush-hour bus lane in the city centre has caused a 'perception issue' for motorists.
Mr Tierney said the early opening of the Samuel Beckett Bridge between 3rd and 10th December would help to address the difficulties.
City retailers are claiming that the restrictions around College Green have damaged business and that jobs may be lost as a result.
A petition calling for the measure to be reconsidered, which was signed by 174 Brown Thomas employees, was circulated at last night's monthly meeting of the Council.
The employees, who are members of the Mandate trade union, said they feared losing their jobs.
Mr Tierney said the bus priority scheme does not prevent access to one single car park.
