Cabinet Begin Extra Meetings Ahead Of Budget
The Cabinet's specially convened meetings are to begin from today in preparation for this December's crucial hotly anticipated budget.
Cabinet meeting's usually take place every Tuesday, but an extra session will be held every Thursday for the next three months to plan for what could be one of the toughest budgets in the history of the State.
Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has said public spending will be slashed by €4bn in this budget alone, and many commentators believe the lion's share will come from the pockets of public sector workers and benefit claimants.
The early indications over the coming budget have led to pre-emptive outrage on behalf of the unions who have launched early campaigns against any such measures.
The Executive Council of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) last week agreed a campaign of opposition to what they called "Government inaction on the jobs crisis, threats to public services and threats to peoples' income".
The campaign called 'There is Still a Better, Fairer Way' outlined measures such as holding of a National Day of Action, on Friday November 6 to take place in Dublin and in a number of regional centres around the country.
A spokesman for the ICTU said the campaign would run at least until the day of Budget 2010, which is expected on December 2 or 8, and possibly beyond.
