New Vehicle Registrations Down 40%

The number of new vehicles licensed in September has fallen by over a third, it has been revealed today.

According to new figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) new vehicle production was down 37.6% compared to the same month last year.

However, although the drop is steep, it is not as big as the 73% and 64.5% falls recorded in July and August respectively.

Overall, there were 8,914 new vehicles licensed for the first time last month, down from 14,292 in September 2008.

A total of 2,272 new private cars were licensed last month, a 47.9% drop on the same month a year earlier. Almost 60% of all new cars licensed were diesel.

In addition, 777 new goods vehicles were licensed last month, a 46.5% decline on September 2008.

The CSO figures show that almost 60% of the new cars licensed last month were diesel, with just under 39% petrol.

Ford led the way with 292, followed by Toyota with 257 and 256 from Volkswagen.

Volkswagen are having a troubling year, with the company's AG’s Audi luxury-car division saying sales had fallen 6.8% in September, led by a drop in Germany.

Worldwide deliveries fell to 88,600 cars from 95,136 a year earlier, the Germany based company said in a statement. German sales slumped 28%.
