Martin Raises 'Undocumented' In US
The Foreign Affairs Minister is expected to raise the issue of undocumented Irish immigrants during a three-day visit to the US.
Micheál Martin will be discussing immigration reform with political representatives from both houses of the US Congress in Washington later today and will once again mark out Ireland's position on the 'undocumented' or those who are in the US illegally.
President Barack Obama committed his administration to deal with the issue in the early part of next year.
The Minister is also due to deliver a keynote speech to the European Institute entitled “Equipping the EU for global challenges: an Irish view”.
Minister Martin will then travel to Capitol Hill where he will meet senior members of Congress including senators John McCain, Chris Dodd, Paul Kirk, Lindsey Graham, Bob Casey, Jeanne Shaheen and Congressman Richie Neal, chairman of the Friends of Ireland. He is expected to brief the senators on the outcome of the Lisbon referendum, the current situation in Northern Ireland, and the recent Global Irish Economic Forum at Farmleigh.
Fianna Fail announced today that the outcome of the forum has been published in two documents available to the public on www.dfa.ie and www.globalirishforum.ie.
The Farmleigh Forum convened earlier this year to explore how the Irish at home and abroad could work together and contribute to economic recovery, and examined ways to develop a "strategic relationship with each other, particularly in the economic sector", according to a Government statement.

Banks Bailed Out
Around €10 billion is to be pumped into the Irish Republic's banking system by the Government in a bid to recapitalise all its listed banks. The money will be available to AIB, Anglo-Irish, Irish Nationwide, Irish Life & Permanent and Bank of Ireland, which owns the Bristol & West Bank.

Minister Humphreys will attend a number of meetings during her visit, including Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs.

Irish Guardsman Dies In Afghan Firefight
The Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson has this morning expressed his sympathy to the family of a soldier from the 1st Battalion Irish Guards who has been killed in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that he was shot in an ambush while patrolling in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province yesterday afternoon.
