Workers March Against Coca Cola Lay Offs
Coca Cola workers have announced plans to march against the company's recent lay off announcement at the company's headquarters in Dublin today.
The protest is part of the workers ongoing campaign against the outsourcing of their jobs. Coca Cola HBC Ireland announced last month it was planning to lay off 130 workers as part of the cost-cutting measure.
However, unions have condemned the decision and the company's decision to reject Labour Court proposals for the employees to be offered a redundancy package in line with previous deals.
Siptu General President, Jack O’Connor, today welcomed a clarification by the Labour Court of its settlement recommendations in the seven-week strike currently ongoing at Coca Cola HBC Ireland. He called on the company “to immediately implement the reasonable recommendations of the Labour Court and settle this increasingly bitter dispute”, and urged the employers’ group, IBEC, to clarify its position on the dispute and the behaviour of the company, which is one of its leading members.
The strike started after the company outsourced the jobs of 130 Siptu members in its warehousing and distribution network in Dublin, Tipperary, Cork, Waterford and Galway. The redundancy packages to staff fell far short of terms agreed previously with Siptu.
The union claims Coca Cola HBC refused to discuss an alternative plan put forward by Siptu representatives, which would have retained a significant number of jobs.
Meanwhile, members of South Dublin County Council have voted to boycott all Coca Cola products until the dispute over outsourcing of jobs and enforced redundancies between Coca Cola HBC Ireland and Siptu is resolved.
At a meeting in Tallaght on Monday, Councillors supported a motion by Councillor Sean Crowe of Sinn Fein to support the Siptu members. The workers were sacked on September 8 while on the picket line.
The motion calls on all businesses in the South Dublin area to cease buying or stocking Coca Cola products until the dispute is resolved. The motion is similar to other boycott calls passed by Tuam Town Council in Galway on Cork City Council.
