Inis Meáin Pier To Benefit From Safety Works
Minister of State Tony Killeen has welcomed the allocation of €60,602 towards safety works at the main pier on Inis Meáin in the Aran Islands.
Funding was issued from the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
The North Clare Fianna Fail T.D said: "The works at Cé an Chalaidh Mhóir include the installation of fenders, lighting, stairs and a railing along the edge of the pier. These works, once completed, will greatly enhance the safety of this pier for both islanders and visitors alike."
Minister of State Killeen noted that the pier had been the subject of significant Government investment in recent years. He explained: "The works already carried out on this important piece of infrastructure include the dredging of a new berthing pool, the construction of a new pier, on-shore and off-shore break water, access road and parking facilities and the development of the harbour itself.
"The cost of the development came to almost EUR14m. The construction company, SIAC, won the Irish Concrete Society’s 2008 Infrastructural and Overall Award for Excellence for the sheltered harbour project "
"The safety works scheduled to take place at Inis Meáin pier will have a hugely positive impact on the livelihoods of fishermen from the island, North Clare, Galway and the other Aran Islands. Furthermore, the works will ensure safer conditions for boat passengers travelling to and from Doolin, Rós a Mhíl and the two other islands," he concluded.

Investigation Launched After Man's Body Recovered From Sea
An investigation has been launched into the discovery of a man's body in the sea at Dinish Pier, Castletownbere, Co Cork. Emergency services were called to the pier after a body was found in the water between two tied up trawlers at about 14:00 on Thursday. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem is due to be carried out today.

Galway Man Remanded In Custody Following Assault
A man from County Galway has been remanded in custody in relation to a serious assault on another man at Rosseveal Pier, Connemara. Jason McLoughlin, 21, was charged with assaulting David Kilblane, 23, causing him harm on 3rd February.

Minor Works Scheme Failure Raising Parents Back-To-School Costs - FF
The government's failure to commit to a Minor Works Scheme for schools is resulting in higher back-to-school costs for parents, Fianna Fáil has claimed. According to the party's Education Spokesperson Charlie McConalogue, schools are being forced to increase the voluntary contributions asked of parents in order to just keep the school running.

€294m Set Aside For Roads Investment
A €249m investment package for regional and local roads in Ireland has been unveiled by Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe TD. The investment will allow some 2,000km of the roads network to be maintained and strengthened in 2015.
