Fine Gael Call For Longer Summer
Fine Gael have called for an extension to summertime daylight hours for several weeks in the spring and autumn following a successful trial in the US.
Fine Gael's David Stanton said he has been campaigning on the matter for several years, and said the USA had extended its summertime hours by three weeks in the spring and one week in the autumn, to great success.
“Extending summertime in both spring and autumn means that evenings will become brighter, and will bring down energy costs and carbon emissions. There is also strong academic evidence to show that it could result in fewer traffic accidents and fatal accidents.
“Many older people are also keen for summertime daylight hours to be extended, as the evenings are brighter as a result.
Control over the issue of summertime hours is centralised at the EU and applied across all 27 member states. The issue was reviewed at EU level a few years ago but remained unchanged. However, Mr Stanton said he believed the time was "ripe" for the matter to be examined again.
"I will be writing again to the European Commission asking them to consider this issue. After all, having more summertime is very hard to argue against."
The daylight saving clock movement, which is scheduled for this weekend, is the subject of ongoing controversy.
"Adding extra hours of daylight time benefits retailing, sports, and other activities that require sunlight, but causes problems for farming, evening entertainment and other occupations. Traffic fatalities are reduced when there is extra afternoon daylight but its effect on health and crime is less clear.
