Mayor Backs 'Connecting In Drogheda'

There has been a pledge of support for an important community facility in Co Louth.

Drogheda Mayor Michael O'Dowd has pledged the support of the Borough Council for the Connect centre, terming it a vital commodity in the present climate for so many people in the town.

"The council agreed at a recent meeting that funding for this centre should not be cut.

"The Minister is very welcome to Drogheda to see for herself the great work being done," he said.

"Moneymore didn't see the benefits of the good times in this country, and indeed probably suffered, so this centre is vital and government support is extremely welcome," he stated.

He also praised the role of the forerunner to the centre, the Drogheda Northside Partnership, remarking on the "great debt" to them for their work.

Now the centre had gone 'mainstream' but the role of volunteers remained crucial and when the hard work behind the scenes was needed, they were not found wanting in their dedication to the success of the project.

"'We know this place is so important to the people of the northside of this town and their needs and we look forward to working with them," he added.

The activities supported by the Family Resource Centres are designed to meet the needs of the local community.

They include the provision of information, advice and support to target groups and families in the area; practical assistance to community groups such as training, information, advice and photocopying facilities as well as education courses and training opportunities.

It also offers child-care facilities for those attending courses provided by the project and runs after-school clubs.
