Anger Follows Fire Service Attacks
A fire service representative has slammed those responsible for attacking fire crews following a spate of incidents yesterday.
John Kidd of SIPTU said some fire officers were becoming hesitant of entering certain areas because of the threat to their lives.
Mr Kidd said that somebody would be "killed soon" if something wasn't done after two fire crews came under attack from stone-throwing youths at two separate fires in Ballymun in Dublin yesterday evening.
Some fire equipment was also taken and gardaí attended the scene.
Soon after, a crew was attacked on nearby Shanganagh Road as they attended a bonfire in a playground.
Siptu convenor for the Dublin Fire Brigade John Kidd said: "There will be at least 20 to 30 fire fighters injured by the end of Halloween."
Mr Kidd says that morale is at an all-time low in the force as officers battle against pension levies, a massive workload and stress.
"It seems you can bash up a fireman and just walk away," he said, adding that there is no compensation available to officers who are injured in the line of duty.
He said there needs to be serious reform of the fire services which is "run like a joke" at the minute.
"Mary Harney talked about wanting a Canadian-style health system, well if we had a Canadian-style fire service, we would have 1,500 more officers."
