Prisoners Face Discipline After Disturbance
Six inmates are facing disciplinary proceedings after a disturbance in Castlerea Prison.
Three of the inmates were taken to hospital from the County Roscommon prison with minor injuries after the six prisoners caused damage to their cells.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the prisoners were said to have smashing television sets, broken glass and attempted to start a fire during the disturbances that lasted two hours.
The prisoners are believed to have been protesting against being moved to Castlerea from the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise.
"The governor had to instruct the control and restraint team to enter the landing to bring the matter under control, which they did very effectively and efficiently," an Irish Prison Service spokesman said.
"No staff were injured and the six prisoners will be subject to disciplinary measures."
This morning a spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service said the prisoners involved will be subject to disciplinary proceedings.
No other inmates are thought to have been involved in the disturbance.
