Man Arrested Over Sydney Backpacker's Death
A man is now in custody and being questioned by Australian police in connection with the death of an Irish backpacker in Sydney.
23-year-old Gearóid Walsh from Dublin tragically passed away last night after being on a life-support machine after being punched in a Sydney fast food outlet last Sunday.
Mr Walsh was struck during an argument with a man in the suburb of Coogee in Sydney. He fell to the pavement, sustaining serious head injuries, and was on a life-support machine until last night.
Police are treating the matter as a murder inquiry.
Police believe he had been drinking at a number of pubs before the fracas ensued.
Mr Walsh was rendered unconscious, had stopped breathing and had gone into cardiac arrest by the time police arrived. He was then put on life-support machine at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney.
The victim's brother, who was with him at the time, and sister live in the city, while his mother flew out yesterday to care for her son.
An Austalian police spokesman said: "About 4.30 this afternoon, a 28-year-old attended Maroubra Police Station along with legal representation and is currently assisting police with their inquiries."
The attack occurred in the same area of the beachside suburb as that in which Irishman David Keohane was viciously attacked in August last year.
