Czech Court Rules In Favour Of Lisbon
The final hurdle to the Lisbon treaty has fallen after a ruling by the Czech Constitutional Court finding that the Lisbon Treaty is not incompatible with the country's constitution.
The Czech Republic was the only EU country whom had yet to ratify the controversial document.
Czech President Vaclav Klaus, a known Eurosceptic, has said he would raise no further objections after EU leaders agreed in Brussels last week to give the Czechs an opt-out from the Charter of Fundamental Rights.
The treaty requires the consent of all 27 member states to come into force and it's future looked uncertain as Mr Klaus refused to sign the document until now.
The treaty is now expected to come into effect throughout the EU on 1 December.
Following the treaty's signing, a number of contests will soon kick in, including the coveted position of EU president.
Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair sparked controversy last week after the current British PM Gordon Brown backed him for the role.
Mr Blair has yet to formerly signal his intent to enter a race for the position, but it is understood that a lack of support from the European Socialist Party has stubbed out his ambitions early.
No other clear front-runners have yet emerged, but the race is likely to include Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, former Finnish prime minister Paavo Lipponen, Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker and former Irish Taoiseach John Bruton.
