Baggott Backs North's Policing Budget

The proposed policing and justice budget in the North will be sufficient to tackle growing dissident republican activity, the PSNI Chief Constable has said.

Matt Baggott told NI Policing Board members the negotiated package would be enough to deal with the dissident threat, and support daily operational needs.

A figure of around £1bn is said to be on offer, following months of wrangling between Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the First and Deputy First Ministers.

Originally a deal of £600m was said to be on the table. A succession of meetings between Downing Street and Stormont saw this amount almost double.

Several other provisions have been made under the proposed financial arrangement.

More money has been agreed to cover compensation claims by police officers suffering from hearing loss.

Funding for a new police training college was also included in the package.

Sinn Fein has continued to push for the new Executive powers to be installed as soon as possible.

The DUP has been accused of stalling over the issue, however, party leader Peter Robinson said no further progress can be made until the unionist community fully supports the new institutions.

He has also called for the abolition of the Parades Commission, a request SF president Gerry Adams branded "unacceptable".
