Subsidy Scheme To Save Jobs

The Government's Employment Subsidy scheme has been launched, and is expected to save up to 35,000 jobs.

Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment, Mary Coughlan revealed the plan today, which will include direct support for 7,478 jobs in its first round.

Some 453 employers are to be informed of their successful application under the scheme, under which a subsidy of €9,100 over 15 months is provided per qualifying employee in vulnerable but viable firms.

The Tánaiste said each of the companies who will receive support under the scheme have committed to retaining an agreed level of employees until December 2010.

Companies around Ireland have now committed to retain 35,283 jobs as a result of this scheme.

Meanwhile, Marks & Spencer is to create 450 jobs when it opens its largest store in the State in north County Dublin.

The move is part of a €500 million extension to the north Dublin shopping centre, which is expected to be completed in five years time, and unfortunately for prospective workers, recruitment will not start until four months before the outlet opens in 2014.

The retailer has agreed to become one of the anchor tenants in a new development at the Pavilions shopping centre in Swords, Co Dublin after a negotiation process that has lasted about a year.

Marks & Spencer's Ireland boss, Jonathan Smith said: "It's an indicator of a long-term strategy, despite the economic difficulties at the moment," he said. "M&S is a popular brand. Our food business is very different from other supermarkets. It wil bring something different and exciting to the centre."
