Cork Hospital Workers Exempted From Strike

Hospital workers in Cork have been exempted from the national day of strike action tomorrow because of the recent flooding.

Siptu said today that local authority workers in County Cork and in two Cork hospitals will be exempted from the industrial action along with colleagues in Clare and Galway, which are also affected by the weekend's deluges.

The spokesman also said hospital support services staff at the Mercy Hospital and St Finbarr’s in the city will continue to work to help deal with the flood crisis.

Gene Mealy, Siptu National Organiser for the local authority sector said: "Over 90% of Siptu members voted to support the national strike on Tuesday but they recognise several areas face emergencies because of the extraordinary weather conditions.

"SIPTU outdoor staff members in Clare, Galway and Cork city have now agreed to work on Tuesday and we will continue assessing the situation between now and then on an area by area basis throughout the country.

Mr Mealy added that staff involved in providing care for the elderly services at St Finbarr’s hospital and employed at the Mercy hospital in Cork would also be working on Tuesday.

"Again, we will be monitoring the situation and our members will always respond wherever there are lives at risk or urgent humanitarian issues to be addressed," he added.

The strike action, taking place tomorrow, is targeting expected cuts in pay, conditions and services by the Government in the upcoming election.

Public sector trade unions are expected today to agree to go back into talks with the Government over generating €1.3 billion in savings without cutting the pay of staff.

However, the scheduled one-day strike tomorrow involving up to 300,000 staff in the public service will go ahead.
