Sales Falling Across Major Sectors

The volume of retail sales across the Irish Republic decreased by 9.1% in October 2009 compared to October 2008.

According to the Central Statistics Office, (excluding price effects) there was a monthly decrease of 0.3% and, if motor trades are excluded, the volume of retail sales decreased by 6.7% in October 2009 compared to October 2008 and the monthly change was -1.7%.

All sectors showed year on year volume declines with the most significant declines

being: non-specialised stores (includes supermarkets) down 3.1%; motor trades down 24.1%; clothing footwear and textiles down 6.8% and bar trade, down 8.2% with household equipment down 11.7%.

Meanwhile, the value of retail sales decreased by 13.9% in October 2009 compared to October 2008 and decreased by 0.6% in the month. However, if motor trades are excluded, the annual decrease was 12.0% and the monthly change was -1.6%.

Unemployment Rise Faltering
Unemployment levels across the State are levelling out. New figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that the numbers signing on the live register decreased by a small amount in April. Seasonally adjusted figures show the Live Register fell by 500 during April, to stand at 432,500 at the end of the month.

15 Year For Man Who Abused Daughter
A Co Clare man found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting his young daughter, has been jailed for 15 years. Last month, a Central Criminal Court jury found the 50-year-old man guilty of the crimes, carried out between October 2009 and October 2010, in Co Westmeath.

April Sales Figures Show Slight Improvement
April 2013 saw mild improvement in retail volume and sales in Ireland, following a worrying March slump. The latest report from the Central Statistics Office showed the volume of retail sales increased by 0.2% in April when compared with the previous month. There was a decrease of 0.5% in the annual figure.

Latest Monthly Homeless Figures 'Meaningless'
The latest monthly homeless figures have been described as "meaningless" by Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin. Deputy Ó Broin made the comment after the Minister for Housing Simon Coveney told the Housing Committee this afternoon that an additional 741 people have been removed from the official figures over the past few months.

'What's left' Survey Finds Disposable Income Decreased Further
More than 1.8 million people are left with €100 or less at the end of the month after essential bills are paid, according to the latest “What’s Left” tracker survey. The survey, carried out by the Irish League of Credit Unions, also shows that half of all adults are also struggling to pay their bills on time.
