Elderly Couple Die In Tipp House Fire

An elderly couple have died in an accidental house fire in Tipperary.

Gardai in Tipperary Town said this morning they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident, which occurred at Locurra, Scalagheen, Tipperary at approximately 8.30pm last night.

The elderly couple, who have been named as Sean and Siobhan Kavanagh - both in their late 70s and early 80s and well known in the area, are believed to have been the only occupants of the house.

A neighbour alerted the emergency services just before 8.30pm last night when smoke was seen rising from the bungalow.

Firefighters rushed to the house but it appears the couple had been overcome with smoke.

Their bodies have been removed to Waterford Regional Hospital where a post mortem will take place later today.

The scene of the fire remains sealed off pending a Garda Forensic Examination.

A Gardaí spokesman said that early indications suggest the fire started accidentally.

The couple had lived at Scalaheen for most of their lives and had seven grown-up children. A family gathering had been planned for Christmas.
