"Treacherous" Conditions Contribute To Fatal Crashes

Gardaí have today described the State's recent road conditions, which are thought to have contributed to three serious road collisions over the weekend, as "treacherous".

A total of three people have been killed on Ireland's roads over the weekend prompting Gardaí to issue a warning to drivers to take diligent care.

Garda Sergeant Brian Whelan said: "Gardaí are warning all motorists to reduce their speed, to plan their journeys and to be extra careful on all roads. The first week in 2010 is set to be bitterly cold. Heavy snow showers are likely and very severe frosts.

"Daytime temperatures are predicted just above freezing and icy conditions persisting all day in many areas and night time temperatures will fall from -5 to -10 in some parts of the country. These weather conditions will make travelling treacherous and dangerous for all road users."

In the latest collision a male pedestrian aged in his early 20s was fatally injured when a vehicle struck in a hit and run incident in the Tiemaleague area of Carndonagh in County Donegal yesterday.

Gardai at Buncrana are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision which occurred at approximately 4.40am on Sunday morning.

A Post Mortem examination is to be carried out by the Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Curtis, later today, at Letterkenny Hospital.

The scene is currently closed for technical examination and diversions are in place.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses, or anyone with information to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 074-9320540, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

Meanwhile, Gardaí in Kilkenny are appealing for witness to a single vehicle road traffic collision which occurred on the N9, main Carlow to Kilkenny Road at approximately 3.30am on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred near the village of Clara (in an area known locally as ‘The Fox and Goose’). The three occupants of the car (all males in their early 20s) were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where one passenger is believed to be in a critical condition.

The main N9 road is currently closed for technical examination and traffic diversions are in place.

At the time of the incident Gardai advised motorists to take extreme care when travelling in the area, and also described road conditions as "treacherous".

Finally, a collision which occurred on a minor road in the townsland of Finnoe, near Ballyhahill, County Limerick on Friday left a 24-year-old man seriously injured when the motor car he was driving collided with a ditch.

He was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on Saturday afternoon.

Gardai are appealing for anyone with information to contact Askeaton Garda Station on 061-601630, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
