Bord Gáis To Announce Price Decrease
There is expected to be some much needed good news for recession hit homeowners today as a slashing in price of gas is expected to be announced.
Householders and small and medium-sized businesses will find how much their gas bill is going to decrease by from February when Bord Gas releases its price revisions later today.
Home heating and power bills have continued to shrink after a year of increased competition in the market, with average yearly costs falling from €910 in October last year to €795.
The drop could be as much as a further €53 in February if the expected 8% decrease is put forward today.
Prices fell last year after the state owned provider's main rival Flogas announced a 9% reduction. Bord Gas' coming announcement is believed to be a pre-emptive measure ahead of possible further reductions by the private sector.
Announcing last year's price cut, managing director of Flogas Richard Martin said: "Our limited Autumn/Winter offer, 9% off the Bord Gáis Energy Supply price, is a strong incentive for existing residential natural gas users to make the change sooner rather than later and take full advantage of reduced fuel bills just as the colder winter months arrive. But if customer demand for this special offer proves exceptional, we'll certainly review the possibility of extending it."
Also today, Bord Gáis said the cold weather had led to an estimated 5% increase in demand in December compared to the same month last year.
