Renewed Appeal Over Galway Burglary

Gardaí are renewing their appeal for information pertaining to a robbery in Galway on New Years' Day.

Galway Gardai re-launched the appeal today asking for further public assistance over the aggravated burglary, which took place at the house on Shantalla Road, Galway City, on the night of the New Years Day at approx 12.30am.

Superintendent Tom Curley of Mill St Garda station said: "The attack on the fragile 80-year-old lady was particularly horrific which lasted for over an hour. It has left this lady traumatised and we are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help us with this investigation."

The scene was technically examined and extensive house-to-house enquiries were carried out.

An incident room has been set up in Galway Garda Station. The areas Gardaí are particularly interested in are Cooks Corner, Maunsell Road, St. Mary's Road, Newcastle Road, Henry Street and Dominic Street.

Witnesses who observed or heard anything suspicious are asked to contact Mill Street Garda Station, Galway, on 091-538000, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

Teen Rescued From Island By Galway RNLI
Galway RNLI have rescued a 19-year-old man from an island off Silver Strand. The teenager had become stranded in an area called Grey Rock by the rising tide at about 19:45 on Wednesday. A kayaker who spotted the teenager and raised the alarm.

Eight Unused Garda Stations Go Under The Hammer
Eight former garda stations are going under the hammer at a public auction in Dublin. It is understood that there has been strong interest in the building, some of which were only vacated recently, with others sitting unused for decades. The stations are located in counties Galway, Cork, Longford, Leitrim, Tipperary and Wexford.

Man Held Over McCarthy Murder
A man has been held overnight for questioning at Ennis garda station in Co Clare in connection with the murder of Deirdre McCarthy. Ms McCarthy, 43, from Turlough House, Ballyvaughan, was found dead on Fanore Strand last Thursday. She was buried yesterday.
