Benefit Claimants Grew 46% In 2009
The live register figures continue to rise going into 2010, according to the latest Government figures.
The statistics released today by the Central Statistics Office said that the seasonally adjusted Live Register total increased from 423,400 in November to 426,700 in December, an increase of 3,300.
Overall in 2009 there was an unadjusted increase in the Live Register of 133,577, which is over 46%. This compares with an increase of 119,642, or 70.2% in 2008. The CSO said they believed the unemployment rate was still set to peak in summer 2010.
January of this year represented a spike in claimant increases in any month, with a record 33,000, or 11.3% rise, with 26,700 additions in February, 20,000 in March; 15,800 in April; 13,500 in May; 11,400 in June; 10,500 in July; 5,400 in August and 600 in September.
The total fell 3,000 in October and rose 900 in November.
When broken down, the figures showed an annual increase of 88,273 in the number of males on the Live Register in 2009 and a corresponding increase of 45,304 in the number of females.
A spokesman for the Small and Medium Enterprises Association reacted angrily to the figures calling them "horrendous". The spokesman went on to say there had been a lack of Government action contributing to the thousands of job losses and that small businesses felt betrayed by Government inertia.
The spokesman added a warning that company closures and further job losses were on the horizon, particularly in first quarter.
