Skibbereen Faces Flooding Risk

An effort to protect parts of Skibbereen in west Cork has been launched following fears of flooding this afternoon.

A combination of high tide, sea swells, heavy rain and melting snow has led to concerns that some areas may be badly flooded.

The army has joined the Civil Defence in trying to protect the town from the floods while water has been restored to a Cork's Mercy Hospital, after supply was cut by a burst main on Sunday.

The Mercy had been relying on tankers to stay open, while hundreds of homes were affected as the fault was repaired.

The same hospital was badly damaged by flooding last November.

Met Eireann has released a weather warning this morning over the floods adding that windy conditions could become "severe".

"Very windy today with some severe gusts across western and southwestern counties but winds easing early tonight. Wet weather continuing to extend countrywide today, some heavy falls across southern counties in particular, with some flooding likely from heavy rain and snow melting," the warning said.

The warning also added there was a risk of some sleet or snow for a time later this afternoon and overnight Tuesday, mainly across parts of the midlands, north Leinster and Ulster and mainly over higher ground here.
