Gov Confirms €190M For Farmers
The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has today confirmed payments of €190 million in the second tranche of grant payments under the Farm Waste Management Scheme.
Brendan Smith TD said today that the 40% Payments would commence this week with the majority of payments being made today.
The Minister said that he welcomed the timing of the grants to farmers, which come in difficult weather conditions.
The expenditure of €190 million is in addition to the €49 million already paid out by the Department and, in all, a total of €293 million was paid under the Scheme in 2009, which compared with an original allocation of €220 million.
By the end of this month, total Exchequer funding for the scheme will have exceeded €1 billion, according to the department this morning.
The Minister said the further payments of grant-aid under the Scheme "represented a vote of confidence in a vital indigenous industry with a huge export presence and reaffirmed the scheme as the most significant on-farm investment scheme in the history of the State."
The news comes as the newly elected Irish Farmers Association president said retailers and processors must deliver viable prices to farmers.
Addressing the 55th AGM of the Irish Farmers' Association in Dublin today, the new President John Bryan set out the key issues for his term of office.
He told delegates that he had identified four issues during the campaign that saw him elected with a strong mandate including sustainable farm incomes, a reduction in bureaucracy costs, a new REPS scheme and the protection of the Single Farm Payment.
