'Let Down' Irish Bishops Called To See Pope
Pope Benedict XVI has summoned Ireland's Catholic Bishops to discuss the church's cover-ups of clerical sexual abuse.
A story in The Irish Catholic newsletter this morning said the Bishops were to attending a planned day-and-a-half of meetings next month on the Ryan and Murphy reports.
The article said that the Bishops were "feeling desperately let down" by their leaders and were looking to Rome for some sort of direction.
Senior church sources last night confirmed The Irish Catholic's story and the unprecedented encounters have been scheduled for 15 and 16 February.
The Irish Catholic said the reports showed up a "dreadfully dysfunctional" style of leadership in the Church that has done tremendous damage. The well-connected newsletter added that the Pope would probably make a statement addressing the crisis in Irish Catholicism as he has done in Australia and in the United States.
Amidst the shake up, an extraordinary meeting of the Irish Bishop’s Conference has been announced to take place in the Columba Centre, St Patrick’s College Maynooth, this Friday. A statement on the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference website said issues for discussion are to include continuing the discussion on the Commission of Investigation Report into the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin and preparing for Pope Benedict XVI’s address on the matter, by way of Pastoral Letter, to the faithful of Ireland.
Rumours are growing that the recent controversy could quicken mooted plans for the Pope to visit Ireland soon.
