Louth Man In Court For Dangerous Driving

A 21-year-old Co Louth man is in court today charged with dangerous driving causing the deaths of two others in a collision in 2007.

Dundalk Circuit Criminal Court heard that Daniel O'Riordan was speeding at the time of the accident, which the defendant denies.

During the hearing today, the court was told that 64-year-old George Campbell was turning his car into the driveway of his home on the Dundalk to Carlingford road when an Audi car coming in the opposition direction causing the collision.

Both Mr Campbell and a passenger in the Audi, David Keenan, died as a result of injuries received in the crash.

Daniel O'Riordan of Point Road, Bellurgan pleaded not guilty to the charge of dangerous driving causing their deaths at Annaloughan, Jenkinstown.

He also denied being in possession of a stolen Audi at the time, as well as other road traffic offences.

The prosecution said that although Mr Campbell was on his incorrect side of the road at the time of the impact, the accident was caused by what he described as the 'very considerable speed' at which the Audi was being driven.

A number of people who came upon the crash today described the scene of the crash and how they saw a young man limping along the road close to the incident.

The case continues tomorrow.
