Public Sector Begins Work-To-Rule

Some 70,000 public sector workers are today joining in the work-to-rule industrial action by other public service unions in protest at pay cuts.

However, the Government has told the SIPTU members that workers not carrying out instructions from management will be suspended.

Labour Relations Commission Chief Executive Kieran Mulvey is meeting with the leaders of the public services committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions later this week.

In contrast a proposed strike at the Mater Private Hospital Group in Dublin and Limerick has been averted following talks at the Labour Relations Commission yesterday afternoon. It was due to begin tomorrow morning.

A SIPTU spokesman said management had agreed to restore pay scales and allowances withdrawn unilaterally at the beginning of January. The two unions representing staff, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation and SIPTU, agreed to enter a process of dialogue with management on the other outstanding issues.

Both unions thanked the LRC for its assistance and the Commission has agreed to facilitate the process agreed between the unions and management.

SIPTU also revealed today that strike notice has been served on the Bon Secours group for tomorrow week and will be served shortly on the Mount Carmel group over reductions in staff pay.
