Irish Bishops Meet With Pope Over Scandal
A two day meeting between Irish bishops and the Pope Benedict XVI has begun in the Vatican over the shocking revelations on clerical child abuse in Ireland.
The talks, which are believed to unprecedented, involve 24 senior Irish clergymen discussing the matter with Pope after being called to the Vatican in the wake of the sexual abuse revelations.
Four bishops have already resigned over revelations contained within the Murphy Report, the revealed "systematic" cover ups of child abuse over three decades by the Catholic hierarchy in the Archdiocese of Dublin.
Last night, the meetings which began at 8am this morning were described by the Primate of All-Ireland Cardinal Seán Brady as "one step in a process…which will lead to a journey of repentance, renewal and reconciliation".
He said that process "hopefully, will gain momentum when we get back to Ireland".
On the eve of the meeting, survivors of clerical abuse demanded leadership and accountability from the Pope and called for financial compensation for victims.
A press conference is scheduled to take place on Tuesday afternoon in the offices of the Vatican were it is expected a summary of the meetings will be given.

Surviving victims of clerical sexual abuse have written an open letter to Pope Benedict XVI regarding the Ryan and Murphy Report revelations. The letter from victims group One in Four, and signed by abuse survivors Marie Collins, Maeve Lewis and Andrew Madden, comes just as Irish bishops prepare to meet the Pontiff in the Vatican next week.

Bishop Asks Priests For €1K Towards Compensation
The Bishop of Ferns has gone to the parish priests, asking them to contribute €1,000 each to pay the outstanding bill for abuse compensation. Bishop of Ferns Dr Denis Brennan made the request in a letter to members of the clergy writing that "the consensus at the Deanery meetings was that €1,000 per priest per year would meet our present needs".

Kenny Calls For Vatican Support
The Vatican and government continue to debate with Taoiseach Enda Kenny calling for full Vatican support in ensuring children are safe from paedophile priests. The Irish Cabinet said it stood by Kenny's unprecedented attack on the Catholic hierarchy over issues concerning sexual abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cloyne.
