Sentence For Killing Brother Suspended

A 19-year-old Kilkenny woman, who was convicted of her brother's manslaughter, has received a five-year suspended sentence at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Waterford.

Caroline Brennan was convicted by a jury yesterday of the manslaughter of her brother Michael Brennan in Castlecomer on 30 December 2008.

In sentencing, Mr Justice Paul Carney said he had taken into account the highly unusual circumstance that the Director of Public Prosecution said he would not appeal a suspended sentence.

Judge Carney said Brennan will have to live with a conviction for fratricide.

He also took into account her concern for her brother's heroin habit and her family's united plea that she should not be imprisoned. Her family hugged her in court and were relieved with the judgement.
