Cork Roads To Receive €46.5m Funding
Cork county and regional roads are to receive funding of €46.5 million for major improvements, according to Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin.
The news comes as Cork County Council launched a Public Transport Feasibility Study. A council spokesman said the recommendations were designed to provide for the public transport needs for the Cork Region up to 2020 and beyond.
The recommendations include plans for a rapid transit system linking City Centre to Bishopstown/ Ballincollig and a future link to Mahon; enhancement of the conventional bus services network and a city centre traffic management scheme.
Speaking about the multi-million Euro road enhancements, Minister Martin said: "It has been confirmed that the City Council is to receive funding of €4.2 million to carry out important works. Communities across the city will benefit, in addition a number of projects have been prioritised on safety grounds, I am pleased to note these include intersections along the Skehard Rd as well as Blackrock Rd and Church Rd.
"Further funding of €42.3 million is being made available to the County Council. Again all areas are set to benefit, but projects prioritised include works at Rochestown, Passage, Monkstown and Carrigaline."
Minister Martin went on to say that the major investment had come at an important time as roads throughout Cork had deteriorated during the recent bad weather and it was important that repairs are carried out as quickly as possible.
