'Great Day' For Shannon Airport
A Fine Gael TD has described the extension of facilities to private aircraft at Shannon as a "great day" for the airport.
Clare TD Joe Carey said the news of larger pre-clearance facilities to private aircraft at the airport was "a huge step forward" for the airport and the region as a whole.
Deputy Carey congratulated those involved and said it is essential to properly market and advertise the extended facility overseas, and for the creation of a major international cargo hub at Shannon.
“This is a great day for Shannon Airport. This development has the potential to bring more business to Shannon and help rejuvenate the airport and the region. We know that six private jets already access Shannon each day. With the right support we could substantially build upon this already existing business base."
Last month, Shannon welcomed an announcement by Continental Airlines that it was to increase its presence at Shannon during the summer of this year by operating four additional services to Newark each week.
Continental Airlines currently operate a daily year round service to its hub in Newark, which provides extensive connectivity throughout the US. The additional services, commencing 28th May until the 8th September, will operate on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
Speaking today, Mr Carey added that the Government needed to get behind the extended services move and engage in an aggressive marketing campaign within business media in the US.
"Due to the economic slowdown there has been a drop in this business, but there is great potential to develop full pre-clearance for cargo. Such a development would greatly compliment the proposed international cargo hub for Shannon airport and help sustain and attract jobs to the region. There cannot be any more delay," he added.
