Bishop Asks Flock For Compensation Funds

An Irish Bishop has turned to his flock - asking them for money to meet the cost of compensation over clerical abuse.

The Bishop of Ferns made the appeal to parish representatives last night in Enniscorthy, during which he said victims of abuse rightly had first call on the diocese's attention.

Bishop Ferns said the diocese had spent over €8m settling 48 civil actions, that some abuses were from over 60 years ago and that another 13 lawsuits are pending.

Over €750,000 had been spent treating offenders, which Dr Brennan called a long-term investment in protecting children.

Almost €1.5m had been paid recently for legal work on the State's Ferns Inquiry.

Bishop Denis Brennan said seeking the funding from the parishes was not about sharing the blame, but "asking for help to fulfil a God given responsibility".

Meanwhile, it has also emerged today that a request to meet the Bishop of Ferns by founder of abuse victims support group One in Four, and Executive Director of Amnesty Ireland, Colm O’Gorman, was ignored.

According to the Wexford Echo today, Mr O'Gorman said he had written to Bishop Drennan suggesting a meeting to discuss the Ferns Report, which identified over 100 allegations of child sexual abuse made between 1962 and 2002 against twenty-one priests from the diocese.

"I got an acknowledgement back to say the Bishop was on holidays but I never heard anything else. To date, I’ve never spoken to him," he said.
