Jewel Robbers Escape After 'Spraying' Staff
Robbers have made off with a haul of jewellery after spraying employees with an 'incapacitating' substance.
Gardai at Athlone are investigating the circumstances of a robbery, which occurred at a jewellery shop on Mardyke Street on Saturday.
The incident occurred at approximately 1.30pm when two males entered the shop armed with what Gardaí described as "incapactitant spray".
During the course of the raid the spray was administered on an employee and customer, both female.
They were both taken by ambulance to Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe.
The raiders made off with an undisclosed amount of jewellery.
The first male is described as approximately 6’ tall, believed to be aged in his late 20s or early 30s. He was wearing a black jacket and trousers and a dark baseball cap.
The second male is described as approximately 5’8’’ in height with blonde hair and also aged in his late 20s or early 30s.
He was also wearing dark coloured clothing.
Gardai are appealing to anyone who was in the St. Mary’s Sq, Irishtown or Mardyke St. area of Athlone between 12.30pm and 1.30pm on the Saturday and who may have witnessed this incident or noticed any suspicious activity to contact them.

Detention Period Extended For Armed Raid Suspects
Gardaí have been approval to extend the detention of seven men arrested in connection with a violent robbery at a house in Co Tipperary. A gang of armed men broke into the family of Mark and Emma Corcoran and their three children. The family were threatened before the gang escaped with cash, jewellery and the family 4x4 car.

The Minister for Justice has been urged to "not drag her heels" on the promise of regulation of the Cash for Gold sector, Fianna Fáil has said. The party's Dublin South West Councillor, John Lahart, has raised concerns of a link between the "out of control Cash for Gold industry and the surge of burglaries in Dublin".
