Marriage 'Sham' In Ireland
Foreign couples in the Irish Republic are caught up in a diplomatic row after being told their marriage status is not legal.
Some 3,000 marriages over the past three years are null and void because they were performed in foreign embassies.
The problem has caused a diplomatic row between the Irish government and a number of European Union states.
The decision also affects the citizens of non-EU states, whose embassies conduct marriage ceremonies.
Last week, the General Register Office in the Republic wrote to all foreign embassies informing them that marriages performed by diplomatic missions were not recognised as marriages unless they conformed to Irish law.
The note said marriages would not be legal unless they were performed by an authorised registrar and took place in a registered building which was open to the public.
The Irish Times reported yesterday that the guidance issued to embassies follows passage of the 2004 Civil Registration Act, which updated existing laws on registering marriages.
It entered into law on 5 November 2007, which means all marriages in embassies since then are invalid.

Marriage Referendum Results Welcomed
Sinn Féin said the result of the marriage referendum represents the lifting of discrimination against the gay community in the rest of the island of Ireland. Daithí McKay MLA is also calling for the same rights to be extended to Northern Ireland.

More Couples Seeking Marriage Counselling
A record number of couples are seeking marriage counselling services, the Catholic marriage care service, Accord, has revealed. The service revealed that 43,627 hours of counselling were provided to 6.145 couples last year and said that there was an 8% increase in demand for couples seeking their services.

Irish Embassies Close To Cut Costs
It has been announced that Ireland will close some of its embassies in a bid to save the State money. Irish Embassy offices at the Vatican, Iran and a representative office at Timor Leste will close their doors. Speaking about the closures Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore said the move came with "greatest regret and reluctance.
