Saint's Day Celebrated

There were thousands on the streets of Ireland yesterday as Saint Patrick's Day was celebrated.

In Limerick, the parade was led by Grand Marshal rugby star Keith Earls. Riding in the back of a Rolls Royce, the Irish back tossed 250 signed small rugby balls into the crowd, which was estimated at more than 70,000.

Hundreds of thousands of people also gathered in towns and villages for more than 180 special events marking the occasion.

Dublin's event bagan in Parnell Square just after noon, with the parade led by Grand Marshal Packie Bonner, the Irish goalkeeping legend.

More than 3,000 performers took part in the parade, which made its way along the 3km route under warm spring sunshine.

Shamrock-painted faces and novelty hats filled the capital's streets, with some brave bystanders dangling from lampposts to catch a better view of the festivities.

'Tens Of Thousands' Attend Dublin Pride Parade
Organisers of Dublin's Pride Parade have said that "tens of thousands" of people took part in this year's event, which was held in the city over the weekend. Marking the largest ever Pride Parade, the event is only second in size to the city's St Patrick's Day programme of events.

RTÉ Creates HD History
RTÉ Sport will broadcast the first ever free-to-air HD broadcasts on Irish free-to-air Television this weekend, in what is set to be a bumper two days of sporting action. The HD broadcasts will be available on RTÉ Two HD, the first Irish free-to-air HD service now available on SAORVIEW.

Rail Services Disrupted In Flood Aftermath
Serious disruption is set to hit rail services on the southside of Dublin and further along the east coast. Irish Rail has said the severe flooding earlier this week damaged the ground around a pier at the Dodder Bridge, and it has had to close the line between Grand Canal Dock and Sydney Parade.

First Night Success of Best Musical In Dublin
Fans flocked to Dublin's Grand Canal Theatre in a first night crowd last night. Following a successful run in Belfast's Grand Opera House, Dancing Shoes: The George Best Story opened last night in the Dublin theatre. Nearly 40,000 people saw the show over its two runs at the Belfast Grand Opera House.
