Waterford Assault Victim 'Critical'

A man remains critically ill after a serious assault in Waterford City.

He is one of two brothers hurt and who are understood to have been assaulted by a group of other men at 11.45pm last night in the People's Park.

The men are both in their mid 20s, and the younger of the two brothers remains in a critical condition in intensive care in Waterford Regional Hospital.

It is understood they were attacked by a group of men wielding hurleys.

The older sibling also sustained several injuries in the attack but his condition was not described as life threatening.

A Garda spokeswoman said the park had been sealed off for a technical examination.

Two Arrested Over Waterford Assault
Gardaí in Co Waterford have arrested two men in connection with the assault and robbery of a teenager in the early hours of Tuesday morning. According to gardaí an 18-year-old was forced to drive from Waterford city to a pub near Passage East shortly after midnight. The teenager when then assaulted by the men after he tried to flee.

Four Arrested Over Waterford 'Serious' Assault
Four people are being held in Waterford after what has been described as a "serious assault" in the town leaving one man in his 20s in a critical condition. Gardai said they have launched an investigation into the assault, which occurred at the Peoples Park, Waterford at approximately 11.45pm last night.

Former Irish Times Editor Dies
Journalist Ella Shanahan, has passed away in her County Waterford home. Ms Shanahan, 60, was the former London Editor of The Irish Times. She will also be remembered for her work in the RTÉ newsroom in the 1970s.
