Public Sector Work To Rule Escalates
The General Secretary of the main public sector union has revealed he expected members to step up the current work-to-rule industrial action if talks this weekend fail to resolve the ongoing pay dispute.
Ahead of the Civil and Public Services Union (CPSU) conference this weekend, Blair Horan said he expected his members to make a "clear decision" to step up their action from work-to-rule to possible strike action.
The pay dispute is expected to be the main focus of this weekend's conference taking place in Galway.
The union, which represents staff at the Passport Office, has warned the Department of Foreign Affairs its campaign will continue until they achieve a positive outcome for lower paid workers.
In a letter to the Secretary General of the Department of Foreign Affairs last night, CPSU official Theresa Dwyer said that the resolve of members was strong and again blamed what she called the debacle on the mismanagement of the office by senior officials during the industrial dispute over pay cuts.
Ms Dwyer said that the impact of the 13% pay cut on her members had been severe.
Earlier in the week, the Minister for foreign affairs, Michael Martin called for a cessation to the industrial action, asking staff in the Passport Service to resume normal working procedures.
"I am greatly concerned at the effects that the ongoing Industrial Action is having on the Irish public. Discussions are underway to resolve the current dispute. Continuation of this action will only have the effect of inflicting pain on Irish people who have plans to travel for personal or business reasons," he said.
Mr Martin added: "The place to solve this dispute is through the Talks Process, not by inconveniencing people and putting them to extra cost."
