Gardaí Call For Permanent Armed Patrols

Garda Sergeants have launched a controversial campaign for armed Gardaí patrols to become a full-time fixture.

The Association of Gardaí Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) said it needed permanent armed patrols to combat an "increase in armed violence".

The dramatic call is expected to be officially made at the annual conference of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI), which opens tonight in Galway.

It is one of 61 motions up for discussion at the organisation's annual conference, with pay cuts and pensions set to dominate this year's conference.

The armed Gardaí Special Response Units currently patrol in regular uniform but if called to respond to an armed or hostage situation can change into a tactical uniform and have access to firearms stored in their patrol cars.

Garda associations have previously expressed concern at the time it takes to make the transition and the likely impact in responding to emergencies.

Officers in areas that have experienced gang violence, such as Cork West, Westmeath, Meath, Galway and Kildare, want officers to be armed all the time to cope with what they believe is an increase in violent incidents.
