'Sun Shining' For Conjoined Twins

The parents of the Irish conjoined twins, who have just undergone separation surgery in London yesterday, have greeted the successful operation saying "the sun is shining today for our two little fighters".

The Benhaffaf conjoined twins endured some 14 hours of surgery as a "world leading" team of surgeons attempted to separate the pair in a specialist unit in Great Ormond Street Hospital yesterday.

Mr Edward Kiely, consultant paediatric surgeon at the hospital, announced positive news yesterday evening that the operation had been a success.

"I can confirm that the twins Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf have been separated in a 14 hour operation. The twins are in intensive care and are sedated but stable. We are pleased with how the operation went," he said.

The boy's parent's, Angie and Azzedine Benhaffaf, had asked for prayers and thoughts for the boys from the public during the surgery and thanked the Irish Nation for its support of the family.

In a joint statement issued along Mr Keily, the Mr and Ms Benhaffaf said: "The sun is shining today for our two little fighters, who have won the battle of their lives. Words cannot express the relief and love we feel for our two boys.

"We thank God, we thank the surgeons and the gifted team at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and we thank from the bottom of our hearts the Irish nation and everyone who prayed for our beloved twins. We are so proud of the courage and strength that Hassan and Hussein have shown, and they both have made the world a much better place with them in it."

A spokesman at the hospital said the next few days were very important for the twins, as patients on the intensive care unit.
