Teen In Court Over Serious Stabbing Attack
A 17-year-old male been brought to a Special Sitting of Dundalk District Court yesterday, in relation to a multiple stabbing incident over the weekend.
A spokesman for Gardaí said that on the night in question, after initial investigations, it appeared that a young male was involved in a disturbance outside a public house on Lauranaces Street and he ran from the scene onto West Street, a short distance away.
There he confronted a group of males who had no involvement in the incident and attacked them with a knife. Seven of the males received stab injuries at this time.
All seven were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda. One was subsequently transferred to the Mater Hospital.
Two of the injured's conditions are described as being critical. The remaining five have injuries not believed to be life threatening.
A male was arrested at the scene and was detained at Drogheda Garda station under the Criminal Justice Act until today's hearing.
At the special hearing yesterday, gardai objected to the accused being granted bail and said it was alleged the youth was armed with a 4-5 inch blade at the time and he had attempted to flee the scene after the incident.
Counsel for the accused said that if granted bail the youth would reside away from Drogheda at a given address, sign on daily at a garda station and surrender his passport.
Judge Brennan said he was not satisfied he should release the youth. He remanded him in custody to St Patrick's Institution and adjourned the case to the Children's Court in Dublin on Thursday.
