Unemployment Rise Faltering
Unemployment levels across the State are levelling out.
New figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that the numbers signing on the live register decreased by a small amount in April.
Seasonally adjusted figures show the Live Register fell by 500 during April, to stand at 432,500 at the end of the month.
However, year-on-year, the number of people signing on is up by 13% and the CSO says the standardised unemployment rate in April stood at 13.4%, up 0.3% on the last quarter of 2009.
Meanwhile the volume of retail sales (excluding price effects) increased by 3.6% in March 2010 compared to March 2009. There was a monthly increase of 2.6% from February.
The volume of retail sales decreased by 1.2% in March 2010 compared to March 2009 however. The monthly change excluding motors was +0.6%.
The value of retail sales decreased by 1.6% in March 2010 compared to March 2009 and there was a monthly increase of 2.2%. However, if Motor Trades are excluded, the annual decrease was 5.3% and the monthly change was +0.7%.
Provisional estimates are now available for the first quarter of 2010 and these figures show the volume of retail sales increased 1.1% year on year and the value of retail sales declined by 3.6% year on year.

Arrests Made Over McMahon Murder Investigation
Three arrests have been made following an investigation into the murder of Seamus McMahon. Two males, in their 20s, and one female in her late teems were arrested in the Drogheda area this morning. They are currently being detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939, at Drogheda and Dundalk stations.

Man Sentenced To Life For Dublin Murder
A Wicklow man has been jailed for life for the gangland murder of a father of two. Garrett O'Brien from Bray was found guilty of the murder of Seamus O'Byrne, 27, in Dublin on 13th March 2009. He was shot five times outside his home at Tymon Park North, Tallaght. His partner and baby son were also at the scene at the time of the attack.

Man Charged With Murder Of Shay O'Byrne
A 29 year old man has been charged for the murder of Seamus (Shay) O'Byrne on 13th March 2009. Eugene Cullen was extradited from Holland and charged last night at Tallaght Garda Station. He has been remanded in custody after appearing at Dublin Crown Court this morning.

April Sales Figures Show Slight Improvement
April 2013 saw mild improvement in retail volume and sales in Ireland, following a worrying March slump. The latest report from the Central Statistics Office showed the volume of retail sales increased by 0.2% in April when compared with the previous month. There was a decrease of 0.5% in the annual figure.
