Cork Murder Suspect Charged

A man has been charged in connection with a woman's death in Co Cork last month.

Gardai in Middleton who are investigating the death of 57-year-old Catherine Smart in Midleton, on 4th April arrested the 46-year-old man last night.

Derrick Daly, of St Vincents Hostel in Cork city, was charged with the murder of 57-year-old Catherine Smart, a separated mother of three, at her home at Baelick Court on Easter Sunday.

Detective Sergeant Joe O'Connor gave evidence this morning of arresting Mr Daly at Anglesea Terrace in Cork city at 9pm and bringing him to Midleton. When charged and cautioned, Daly made no reply, he explained.

It is believed that the victim had suffered fatal head injuries.

Gardaí Appeal For Witnesses To Cork Hit-And-Run
Gardaí in Cork have appealed for witnesses to a hit-and-run in Co Cork at about 19:30 on Tuesday. A 71-year-old woman is being treated in hospital after she was knocked off her bicycle at Haymount, Lower Woodstock in Carrigtwohill. Her injuries are described as serious but not life-threatening.

On-Duty Firefighter Arrested On Suspicion Of Drink Driving
A fireman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving while on duty behind the wheel of a fire engine. The man was driving a fire truck on the Callan Road, Kilkenny over the weekend and approached a checkpoint. It is believed he was returning from an emergency incident and failed a breath test. He was issued a fixed charged penalty notice.

Truck Crashes Into House In Co Cork
A woman in Midleton, Co Cork managed to avoid injury when a truck crashed into her house yesterday morning. According to gardaí a reversing truck collided with the house on Rosary Place, Midleton, at about 10am on Monday. The homeowner was home at the time of the incident but it is understood that no one was injured.
