Daíl Suspended After Row
The Daíl was suspended for 15 minutes today after a row erupted in the chamber over a planned adjournment to run until next Wednesday.
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny refused to take his seat, incensed by the proposals that would see no oral questions to ministers and no votes taken next week, diminishing the scrutinizing efforts of the house.
Mr Kenny had been on his feet complaining about next week's Dáil sitting and ignored calls from the Ceann Comhairle to sit down.
After the session resumed, the Governent majority in the Dáil voted to allow the adjournment of proceedings from tonight until next Wednesday 9 June.
Mr Kenny described the proposal as a "sham", while Eamon Gilmore of the Labour party said it was "unconstitutional"
The debate continued in a heated manner and Fine Gael Deputy Bernard Durkan was suspended from the House for ten minutes for shouting and being disorderly on the issue.
Opposition parties said next week's sitting would not follow the normal run of business.
Speaking afterwards, member of the Opposition described the move as "a muzzling of parliament".
