Kenny's Leadership 'Threatened By Defections'
The defection of two high-profile party spokesmen last night has thrown into serious doubt Enda Kenny's prospects of winning his vote of no confidence.
Mr Kenny arrived 'feeling great' at Leinster House this morning ahead of the no confidence vote being taken by members of the Fine Gael parliamentary party.
Mr Kenny said remained confident he would win today's vote by a comfortable margin despite claims by his opponents that they have the numbers to defeat him.
Mr Kenny's chances of success were damaged badly yesterday when frontbench TD and justice spokesman Charles Flanagan and acting finance spokesman Kieran O’Donnell declared against the Fine Gael leader yesterday.
The outcome will now come down to a handful of parliamentary party members who have not yet declared their allegiance for either Mr Kenny or his challenger, Richard Bruton.
Mayo TD Michael Ring today said Mr Kenny would need at least 36 votes to win the confidence motion. "I expect Enda Kenny to win it today by 40-30," he said.
A total of 11 members of the 19-strong front bench, as well as former deputy party leader Richard Bruton, have publicly declared against Mr Kenny.
70 TDs, senators and MEPs will take part in the vote.
The meeting is due to start at 11.30am and result is not expected until this afternoon at the earliest.
