Man, 24, Gets Life For Galway Murder

A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his Czech female friend in Connemara in Galway two years ago.

Jakub Fidler, also from the Czech Republic, admitted in court to the murder of 19-year-old Nicola Vonkova, also from the Czech Republic, at Cartur Leathan, Indreabhán, between 20 and 21 July 2008.

The court was told Ms Vonkova died from strangulation after a row developed over spying on Mr Fidler's instant messaging and email accounts.

Upon arriving at the scene, gardaí found Mr Fidler in a very emotional state; he directed them down a path adjacent to the house.

There, gardaí discovered the teenager’s body lying face down in a drain, immersed in water.

Supt Noel Kelly, a senior investigating officer in the case, told the court that prior to Mr Coleman’s phone call to gardaí, the accused had made a number of communications via internet, to his mother in the Czech Republic, in which he made admissions implicating himself in the murder of the deceased.

The accused was taken to Galway garda station where he told gardaí during interviews he had been in the company of Ms Vonkova from 7pm on the evening of July 20, 2008 untill her death.

Ms Vonkova's family travelled from the Czech Republic for the sentencing.

In a letter read to the court, her mother said she was a mother who survived her child and that was a situation no parent was prepared for.

She said she was unable to accept the death of her daughter.

Mr Justice Paul Carney imposed the mandatory life sentence.
