French Strike Delays Irish Holiday Makers
The Dublin Airport Authority has said a strike by French air traffic controllers' is causing delays and cancellations to flights between Ireland and France.
Aer Lingus, Air France and Ryanair flights to and from Paris, Nice, Carcassone, Biarritz and Marseille have all been cancelled today.
French air traffic controllers are striking over EU plans to merge civil aviation authorities in six countries amid fears it could lead to job losses. The action is expected last until early Thursday.
Under the new European plan, French air traffic authorities will be combined with those in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium.
The European Commission hopes the so-called Single European Sky will improve security, boost capacity and cut the cost of air-traffic services but unions say jobs at risk will inevitably be cut.
However, one of the biggest trade union confederations, the CFDT, condemned the strike as an unnecessary hassle for holidaymakers.
The strike, called by several controllers' unions, forced the cancellation of about 20% of flights at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport, the nation's biggest.
The second-busiest airport, Paris Orly, was worse hit with about 50% of cancellations, civil aviation authorities said.
Government spokesman Luc Chatel told LCI news channel that the strike was 'unacceptable' and would place many travellers going or returning from holidays, in a hostage situation.
