Snooker Legend Laid To Rest

Twice world champion, Belfast-born Alex Higgins' funeral is taking place at St Anne's Cathedral Belfast today.

He had been suffering from throat cancer for many years and died last weekend at his home in Belfast's Sandy Row, within a mile of the home of his youth.

He went on to develop a stormy career in snooker and won the World Championship twice, in 1972 and 1982.

Thousands of people are expected to gather along the route of the cortège which leaves the family home at Roden Street in south Belfast for the funeral which will begin at 11.30am with past and present stars of the game expected to attend.

The cortège, which will be lead by a horse-drawn carriage, will go from Roden Street to Donegall Road and then to Sandy Row where there will be a short pause at Alex Higgins' birthplace at Abbington Street.

It will then go on to Hope Street, Great Victoria Street, Fisherwick Place, Wellington Place, Donegall Place, Royal Avenue and then to the cathedral at Lower Donegall Street.

The service will be lead by Houston McKelvey, the Dean of Belfast. Jimmy White is expected to read a tribute.

Mr Higgins will be buried at Carnmoney Cemetery in Newtownabbey.
