Poll Reveals 'Hunger' For General Election
An opinion poll in the Irish Sun newspaper has revealed that a majority of voters want a general election before the end of the year.
A majority of 59% said they wanted the Government to call a general election in 2010 in the poll conducted by RED C. The election call was loudest among 25 to 34 year olds, who are most affected by the ongoing unemployment problems, with 69% saying they wanted a general election before year end.
Some 62% of women wanted the general election to be called, while the figure was lower among men at 55%.
According to other results of the poll, Eamon Gilmore would be the most popular Taoiseach, despite his popularity falling compared to a similar poll taken five weeks ago.
Only 18% of respondents thought Brian Cowen would remain as Taoiseach, while 27% said the new leader of the Daíl would be Fine Gael's leader Enda Kenny. This leaves Eamon Gilmore with a majority of favour among voters at 33%. A significant 22%, however, said that they did not want any of the main party leaders as Taoiseach, or had no opinion.
According to betting website PaddyPower.com, the next election is expected in 2012, with a Fine Gael and Labour coalition expected to take power at 1/3. A Fianna Fail majority government has been given the odds of 80/1.
