West Belfast Families Flee Alert

The latest in a long-running series of security alerts blamed on republican dissidents has led to about 100 families being forced to leave their homes last night.

It happened after a suspicious car was left outside New Barnsley PSNI station.

Army technical officers were called to the scene and carried out several controlled explosions, however, nothing was found and a police spokeswoman confirmed that residents were allowed to return to their homes on Thursday morning.

On Tuesday, a 200lb car bomb exploded outside Strand Road police station in Londonderry.

In Bangor, an Army major had a lucky escape when a booby-trap bomb fell from his car on Wednesday.

The officer was driving away from his home in the Chatsworth area of Bangor, a quiet residential area, around 7.50am on Wednesday when he noticed a suspicious object lying on the driveway.

Around 30 homes were evacuated while the device was made safe.
